Tips and Hints

Here are a few useful tips and hints to aid you in getting the best out of playing Final Fantasy VIII!

Unlimited Potions

To receive a constant and guaranteed supply of potions, head to Timber, and you’ll meet a man on the bridge. This man will give you a potion and run away, as long as you have Quistis in you current party of three. To get another potion, simply walk off the screen, then go back and he’ll be standing there again, ready to give you another potion. Tedious as it may be, if your starting out, it’s a great way to get the extra curatives you need. If the man happens to not be there, keep walking in and out of the screen until he does.

Forbidden Magic

To gain some powerful Forbidden magic spells:

Magic Spell Location
Ultima Shumi Village, must pay 5 000 Gil for access to the draw point.
Ultima Fisherman’s Horizon, Mayor Dolby’s house has a free draw point.
Ultima Timber, Lolipolooza Canyon
Ultima, Flare, Meteor, Aura, Tornado, Maelstrom etc The Island Closest to Heaven, and the Island Closest to Hell.

Note: When going to the Islands Closest to Heaven and Hell, it’s best if you have encounter-none on, or at least encounter-half, because otherwise you’ll get into numerous battles, all of which will be against dragons with third level magic.

Extra Summons

To summon extra Guardian Forces to your aid in battle, all you need do, is buy and use certain rare items.

Rare Item Summons Effect How to obtain
Gysahl Greens Boko Choco Fire, causes fire damage Buy and use a Gysahl Greens from Choco Boy in any Chocobo Forest.
Phoenix Pinion Phoenix Rebirth Flame, brings one character back to life with minimum health. Use a Phoenix Pinion during battle. Can be refined from one Mega Phoenix, using Tool-RF.
Friendship Moomba Paw Attack, physical damage to all enemies Through chance/victory in battle, it’s not something you can just buy.
Mogs’ Amulet Mini Mog Dance, fully restores Guardian Forces HP. Allow a Guardian Force to learn the Mini Mog ability using Mog’s Amulet.

Rare GF Items

To recieve a Pet Name Tag (gives you the ability to name a GF whatever you want), catch a train in Timber, ride the train to the Far East Galbadia Station, then return on foot. You will find a man in an anorak outside of Timber Maniacs. This man is about to give up his dream of being a journalist. When you talk to him, choose to encourage him, and he’ll give you the Pet Name Tag. If you choose to ignore him, he’ll just end up whining later in the game.

Note: This can only be done on Disk 2.

Rare Curative Items

After you beat BGH251F2 at Fisherman’s Horizon, (with Selphie and her missile team inside), head on over to Grease Monkey’s house, (follow the rail road tracks to the far right of the Town Square). Upon entering his house, there will be an arguement between an Artisan and a soldier. Exit the house and walk back in, thus breaking up the arguement. Then talk to Grease Monkey, and as thanks, he will give you a Mega Phoenix.
